A team of scientists has completed a carbon dioxide emissions inventory of the United States plotted down to 100-square-kilometer chunks.

That means that the NASA- and Department of Energy-funded scientists can detail emissions across all 9 million square kilometers that compose the United States. For a full explanation, check out the video that Purdue’s Kevin Gurney put together, which features a number of other excellent CO2 visualizations. Andy Revkin, the New York Times‘ environment-beat writer, put a memorable headline on a post about the video, calling it, “Breath of a Nation.”

The work, known as The Vulcan Project, has already yielded a significant discovery: Previous CO2 estimates that used population as a proxy for emissions overestimated the Northeast’s greenhouse-gas generation, while underestimating the coal-heavy Southeast’s contribution.

Now, given the opposition of the Southeast’s congressional delegations to climate-change action, I’d like to see the new emissions map matched up with House and Senate districts.

Baking Soda: The Cure for Global Warming?

” In recent months, PopSci has covered various scientists’ plans to curb global warming through carbon sequestration, mainly by feeding it to algae to make biofuel, or burying it underground. Today, a company called Skyonic announced a novel new system, Skymine, which uses the carbon dioxide emitted from smokestacks to make baking soda. According to Skyonic CEO Joe David Jones, the system will be powered by waste heat from factories, and will produce food-grade baking soda.

Last year, the utility company Luminant installed a pilot version of the system at its Big Brown Steam Electric Station in Fairfield, Texas. There’s still quite a bit of work to be done to make the current system viable on a large scale, but the baking soda idea offers solutions to some of the economic problems posed by other carbon sequestration methods.” >>>Full Article.

“Having gained a certain degree of expertise in developing and designing its own energy efficient data centers, Google thinks it’s in a position to help spur on the adoption of even more renewable energy sources.The Mountain View company announced on Tuesday a new research and development group whose mandate will be to continue to develop electricity from renewable energy sources much cheaper (and cleaner) than coal. The new initiative, dubbed Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, will primarily target energy sources like advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies and enhanced geothermal, according to Google co-founder Larry Page, and the company plans to shell out tens of millions of dollars in 2008 on R&D and related investments.

Google also said it anticipates investing hundreds of millions of dollars in other renewable energy projects which the company also hopes will generate positive returns.

“Clean and affordable energy is a growing need for our company, and we’re excited about the opportunity to help create competitive green alternatives,” said Page in a Tuesday blog post. “Our new initiative isn’t just about Google’s energy needs; we’re seeking to accelerate the pace at which clean energy technologies are developing, so they can rival the economics of coal quickly.” >>>>>The Full Monty

Severn-Cullis-Suzuki now in her late 20s, started the Environmental Children’s Organization (ECO) when she was only 9-years-old. ECO was a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues.
